16 Apr 08: Welcome back to some of our Marines from The Bulldog Challenge at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina

Sponsored by The Citadel’s Semper Fidelis Society, the Bulldog Challenge attracts teams from colleges, universities, law enforcement, and the military each year. The event consists of a six-mile endurance course designed to test the physical and mental toughness of the competing teams. Among the challenges are the Marine obstacle course, the stadium climb, firefighters’ carry and pull-ups. Each four-person team must run the course while carrying three 20-pound sandbags.

Since its creation in 1996, The Bulldog Challenge has grown into a nationally recognized event. In 2002 MTV’s reality series Road Rules Campus Crawl featured the Bulldog Challenge. This year's challenge consisted of 76 teams from all over the country.

Proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to a scholarship fund in honor of Marine 2nd Lt. Almar Fitzgerald, Citadel Class of 2004. 2LT Fitzgerald died in February 2006 after being injured by an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Iraq.

SUNY Maritime brought 6 teams and 2 staff representatives. One of our teams (MIDN 1/c Thomas Williams, MIDN 1/c Evan Bernstein, MIDN 3/c Lawrence Montreuil and SSGT Edward Pages) placed in the top 10 with a time of 1:16:20.

01 Dec 07: Navy Battles Army for Win!

In the first annual Maritime, Fordham, and Molloy NROTC vs. Fordham AROTC flag football game, Navy swiftly defeated Army 50-0 at home on the cold windy Maritime College turf field the morning of December 1, 2007. The NROTC team was led by Staff Sergeant Kapey and Midshipman 1/C Dimone to the victory over the AROTC team led by MS4 Evans. Once a four year old tradition started in 1987, the tradition was reinstated by the two units this fall of 2007. To commemorate the victory, our NROTC Battalion retained possession of the twenty year old football which was used as a trophy when the tradition began. After the game, to show the great brotherhood and respect between the two battalions, the two teams ate lunch and watched the televised Army vs. Navy game together at the Harbor Inn outside the gates of the Maritime College campus.

16 Nov 07: US ARMY Blackhawk Helicopters visit Maritime College

On Friday, 16 November 2007, the SUNY Maritime College and the NROTC Unit hosted three Army Blackhawk helicopters for a 90 minute exercise. The Army ROTC Unit at Fordham University worked in conjunction with the NROTC Unit at SUNY Maritime to arrange for the Blackhawks to land at SUNY Maritime College. The Army ROTC Unit did this as a part of a training evolution, and the NROTC Unit gained valuable hands-on training as well. On the afternoon of the landing, the Blackhawks came in from the Southeast corner of the baseball field and landed, one in front of the other. After the third Blackhawk fought with intense winds and finally landed, the rotors were shut down and members of the NROTC Battalion were allowed to walk the makeshift flight line and were given a hands-on tour of the Blackhawks. The pilots answered students’ questions while the Army Cadets (approximately 50) were given a flight brief and practiced emergency egress procedures. Upon completion of the exercise, the Blackhawks departed for Fort Dix, N.J.
