NROTC is a military leadership program that develops motivated college students into our country's future leaders. The mission of NROTC is to develop young men and women morally, mentally, and physically, and to instill in them the highest ideals of honor, courage, and commitment. The NROTC Program was established in 1926 to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy or Marine Corps. As the largest single source of Navy and Marine Corps officers, the NROTC Program fills a vital need in preparing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps. NROTC students complete their bachelors degree while earning a commission as an Ensign in the Navy or Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. After graduation, NROTC students will serve our country with the potential to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.
Located in historic Fort Schuyler, New York City's only NROTC program is currently headquartered at SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx. The NROTC Unit is comprised of students from SUNY Maritime College, Fordham University, and Molloy College. These three New York City NROTC affiliates are among the 59 national colleges and universities that make up the national NROTC program. Over 170 students attending SUNY Maritime College, Fordham University, and Molloy College make up the diverse group of students reflecting the diverse population of the United States. The quality of these NROTC students speaks for itself as 3 of the last 4 SUNY Maritime College valedictorians have been NROTC students. Each student participates in one of four distinct commissioning programs:
- Navy/Marine Corps ROTC
- Merchant Marine Reserve (MMR) USNR Midshipman Program
- Navy Seaman to Admiral Program
- Marine Enlisted Commissioning and Education Program (MECEP)
While participating in the NROTC program, students are challenged academically, physically, and mentally through a rigorous Navy and Marine Corps course curriculum and physical regimen. Students are subjected to dynamic Naval Science courses ranging from Naval Engineering to Leadership and Ethics, along with a weekly physical training regimen. Additionally, the NROTC Battalion meets on a weekly basis for a Leadership symposium designed to test and develop the student's thoughts and perceptions. Throughout their four years of coursework, students have numerous opportunities to assume challenging leadership positions within the battalion.
The New York City NROTC Battalion is extremely active in the local community, taking advantage of its location in the world's most exciting city. Each year ,the NROTC Battalion seeks opportunities to serve the local community by volunteering its services throughout the tri-state area. During the 2006-2007 academic year, the NYC NROTC Battalion participated in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the World Trade Center Commemorative event, as well as mentoring local Navy Junior ROTC High School Programs and organizing a Navy Junior ROTC Drill Meet.
