  • Local Military Support Information

    • Military Housing is available at Mitchel Manor in East Meadow, NY, and Mitchel Field in Garden City, NY (3 miles north of Mitchel Manor).  Located in Nassau County, the Mitchel Complex is approximately 30 miles due east from Manhattan, and 22 miles from the SUNY Maritime campus.  Military Housing may also be available at the U.S. Army facility at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn which is approximately 25 miles through city traffic from the Maritime College campus.
    • Housing Particulars: Mitchel Complex is a Navy military housing area that was recently privatized and is operated by GMH Military Housing.  Information on the facilities can be found online at http://www.mitchelhomes.com.
      • Size of housing authorized depends on the member’s pay grade, number, age and gender of dependents.  There may be a waiting list.  Many units are undergoing renovations with newly upgraded units becoming available starting in November 2005.
      • Acceptance into Mitchel Complex housing requires signing a lease, carefully designed to meet the needs and unusual circumstances of military personnel.  Rent is charged equal in amount to the BAH rate for the member and includes electricity, water, trash pickup and heating.  Rent payment by allotment is encouraged and is easy to set up.  Units are provided air conditioners.  Public transportation is available, but not practical for getting to/from SUNY Maritime and the Fordham campuses.  Mitchel Complex is just a few minutes away from Molloy College.
      • The cost of operating a POV is high because of insurance rates and tolls.
      • Local school busing for both private and public schools is available.
      • A maximum of 2 walking pets are allowed per family.
      • Housing may be available for bachelors.  Bachelors may share a multi-bedroom unit splitting the cost of rent which will be set at a market rate for the unit.  In this case, bachelors may be able to keep any BAH which is in excess of their rent.
    • Facilities:  A DECA Commissary and Navy Exchange are located adjacent to the Nassau Community College campus approximately 3 miles from Mitchel Manor housing.  The Navy Exchange does not offer Navy/Marine Corps uniform items but has a ‘hotline’ for placing special orders.  Various Nassau County athletic and recreational facilities are close to the housing area and are available for use by military families, many without charge. There is a medical clinic (Bailey Seton) adjacent to the commissary which accepts active duty members on Tricare Prime Remote and Tricare dependents.  The Long Island Children’s Museum and Cradle of Aviation Museum are located near the NEX/Commissary complex.  A community center and pool is planned as part of the Mitchel Manor renovations and should open in 2006.
    • Civilian Housing: A wide variety of civilian housing is available in area.  The Mitchel Complex Housing Office has a Rental Referral Program with military-friendly lease terms and units to offer, primarily on Long Island. Many current STA-21/MECEP students have found housing in areas near the Maritime College campus using commercial resources.  For some, internet rental offerings have been very helpful.  Prospective students should inquire about fees prior to using a rental agent to find housing.  In some cases, non-refundable commercial renter agent fees can amount to several thousand dollars above and beyond rent advances and deposits.  All students are strongly advised to start their housing searches with a call or stop at the Mitchel Complex Housing Office.
