Upon completion of the NROTC Program, all midshipmen incur an 8 year reserve obligation to the Navy or Marine Corps. Additionally, a certain portion of the 8 year reserve commitment must be served on active duty, as follows:
- Navy Option NROTC Scholarship midshipmen must serve at least 4 years on active duty. Nuclear power and aviation officers incur longer active duty obligations due to their advanced officer training.
- Navy Option NROTC College Program Advanced Standing Midshipmen must serve at least 3.5 years on active duty. Nuclear power and aviation officers incur longer active duty obligations due to their advanced officer training.
- Marine Corps Option NROTC Scholarship Midshipmen must serve at least 4 years on active duty.
- Marine Corps Option NROTC College Program Advanced Standing Midshipmen must serve at least 3 years on active duty.
- NROTC MMR Midshipmen who select to go on active duty must serve at least 3 years on active duty.
- All NROTC Midshipmen who are receiving financial aid from NROTC (scholarship, stipend, SIP) and are in AT LEAST their 3/C year (sophomore) also have an obligation should they be separated from the NROTC program. The obligation is either a repayment of scholarship benefits or two years enlisted service, as determined by the Secretary of the Navy.
- ALL 4/C Midshipmen (freshmen) participate throughout their first year with NO OBLIGATION.
- STA-21 Officer Candidates and MECEP Marines should consult the Navy and Marine Corps instructions for their program to determine their obligations.
