Do I need a scholarship to join NROTC?

NO - you can join NROTC without a scholarship, preferably at the beginning of your freshman year in college.  You can join any time during your freshman year, but you will have to make up missed classes and will not be able to compete for a 3 year scholarship until you have been in the program one full semester.

How do I apply for a NROTC scholarship?

There are 3 types of scholarships that you can apply for:  4 year NROTC, 2 year NROTC or Merchant Marine Reserve Student Incentive Payment (MMR SIP).

4 year NROTC scholarships are applied online at https://www.nrotc.navy.mil.  You can choose between Navy, Marine Corps or Navy Nurse.  These scholarships are for high school students, and the deadline is January 31 of your senior year in high school.

2 year NROTC scholarships are also applied for online at https://www.nrotc.navy.mil.  You can choose between Navy, Marine Corps or Navy Nurse.  These scholarships are for college sophomores who have not participated in NROTC, and the deadline is March 1 of your sophomore year in college.  If accepted, you will go to Newport, RI during the next summer for 6-8 weeks to catch up on the missed NROTC training, and prepare you for joining the NROTC Battalion as a junior.

The MMR SIP scholarship is those freshmen students at SUNY Maritime College who are pursuing a merchant officer license.  The application is filled out at the NROTC office (room A1 in Fort Schuyler) by April 1 of the freshmen year.

Non-scholarship students who participate in the NROTC program are automatically considered for 3-, 2- and 1-year NROTC scholarships after every semester based on their college grades, their scores on the NROTC physical fitness test, and their participation in NROTC.

When do the scholarship benefits begin?

Scholarship benefits begin the semester after you are awarded the scholarship, provided you are found medically qualified.  Once awarded the scholarship, you will be told how to schedule a medical examination through the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB).  The exam will be performed by a doctor near where you live at no cost to you.

Results can take up to 2 months, so we recommend you complete the exam at the earliest possible time so your scholarship benefits are not delayed.

How are NROTC scholarships assigned to colleges and universities?

When you apply for the NROTC scholarship, you will indicate what college or university you want to attend, listing up to five different schools.  When you are selected for the scholarship, the NROTC program will review your application for your school choice.  If there is room at the NROTC Unit for your first school, the scholarship will be awarded to you for THAT NROTC UNIT.  Because of the policy to level load the scholarships between the various NROTC Units across the country, there is the possibility that your first choice school (and 2nd and 3rd, etc.) may be full.

You are still required to be accepted by the college or university to be able to use the scholarship.

Does the NROTC scholarship cover room and board (meals)?

NO -- the NROTC scholarship cover academic related expenses.  Room and board are not covered.  However, the following colleges provide benefits to students who have NROTC scholarships.  These benefits are from the school and are subject to change at the discretion of the college or university.

SUNY Maritime College - free room for 4-year NROTC scholarship students

Fordham University - free room for 4- and 3- year NROTC scholarship students

Molloy College - because of the lack of dorms on campus, does not provide any assistance with room or board.

What is the relationship between the Maritime College Regiment of Cadets and the NROTC Battalion?

The Regiment of Cadets is a core part of the SUNY Maritime College, providing cadets with a structure outside of the classroom to compliment the training required for Merchant Officers.  The NROTC Battalion is made up of those students are in the NROTC program, pursuing a commission in either the Navy or Marine Corps.  Many members of the Regiment of Cadets are also members of the NROTC Battalion and vice versa.  Membership in both is required for the students in the MMR program and for those midshipmen who are in a license/degree program.

In many ways, both organizations benefit the other, but they are two distinct organizations.

Can I be in the Military Reserves and in NROTC at the same time?

Yes, as long as you:

For those in the reserves who expect to be in one of these categories, you will be discharged from the reserves, and will sign a reserve contract with the NROTC program.  This is because you are only allowed to be committed to one branch of the military at any one time.

How do the uniforms for the Maritime College's Regiment of Cadets compare with NROTC uniforms?

The Regiment's uniforms are very similar to the NROTC uniforms, differing only in insignia and the summer dress uniform.  In fact, if you intend to be a member of the Regiment and pursue a commission through the NROTC scholarship or college program, the NROTC program will reimburse you the cost of your uniforms, plus provide you with the insignia you need to convert it to wear to NROTC events.

NROTC uniforms are worn for NROTC specific events, including on Wednesday for the NROTC leadership lab.

Uniform costs are paid back over 3 years and eventually total over $3,000.  Midshipmen in the MMR program are not reimbursed uniform costs.

When am I obligated to the Navy or Marine Corps?

Your ENTIRE freshman year is a FREE shot at trying out the NROTC program.  If you decide NROTC is not right for you at any time BEFORE the start of classes your sophomore year, you have not obligation to either the Navy or Marine Corps.  You only return the uniforms and books we issued you and you are on your way.

If you leave the NROTC program after the start of your sophomore year, the Secretary of the Navy will determine whether you have to pay back scholarship benefits received or serve on active duty for two years.

If you are a college program student, your obligation does not start until your junior year.

What is my commitment when I graduate?

Midshipmen will have military service obligations of eight years. Scholarship midshipmen must serve at least four of those years in active duty status, while College Program midshipmen must serve at least three years of active duty service if they accept a commission. Marine Corps option college program midshipmen are obligated to three and a half years if they accept a commission. The service commitment times vary according for submarines, surface warfare (nuclear power), pilots and naval flight officers.
