Merchant Marine Reserve (MMR) - this is a unique program to the SUNY Maritime College from other NROTC Units permits students to be in the Navy Reserves after commissioning, while working in the maritime industry.  Students can also apply for the Student Incentive Payment (SIP) during their freshman year at SUNY Maritime College.  SIP is worth $16,000; you will receive $4000 at the beginning of your sophomore, plus $1000 per quarter for your final three years.  You must complete four Naval Science classes,  participate in the weekly NROTC leadership labs on Wednesday afternoons, plus other NROTC activities aimed to help you to become an officer in the Navy Reserves.

Following college graduation and commissioning, you must maintain an active Coast Guard merchant officer license for at least 6 years and serve in the Navy Reserves for at least 8 years, and work in the maritime industry.  You may also elect to serve on active duty, with the same Navy opportunities as scholarship and college program students.  You must be a member of the SUNY Maritime College Regiment and earn a Coast Guard license in addition to your college bachelors degree.

If you are interested in the MMR program, we encourage you to participate in NROTC activities during your freshman year.  By participating in the NROTC program as a freshman, you will also be considered for a 3-year NROTC scholarship.

LTJG Porell can be contacted regarding other specific questions on the MMR program or how to apply for the Student Incentive Payment (SIP).
